Answer:
The reason that it needs replacing after 5 years is because the amount of hormones it releases gradually decreases over time and at 5 years it has reached a level that’s too low to be effective. I would say if you're worried about it, Just have it removed and go with something that makes you feel more comfortable and safe.
I’ve had mine in for 1 year and 9 months. I’ll be TTC in approx. 8 months. I have heard that it can take several months, sometimes even up to a year to return to fertility after removal. That fact, in addition to some current side effects has made me decide to have it removed and use something else for the next 8 months. Probably the patch as I've used it before.
As always, I think it's ideal to go with your gut and what makes you feel most comfortable. You're the one that has to live with the decision and/or consequences of it, So do what's best for you
Good luck!

I know that it says that in the pamphlet, I was under the same impression. But from the research I’ve done I’ve encounter quite a few women that had issues getting their cycle regular and conceiving after having the Mirena removed. Can sometime take up to a year. I think the stat I read on a Report Abuse
Answer:
medical website was that 20% of women TTC after removal were still not pregnant by the end of one year. Just what I've learned. Report Abuse
