I’m 22 and yesterday I went to see my GP and he was very nice and we talked for about 45 minutes and he gave me a referral for a psychiatrist and I called the hospital, and they told me that I’ve to drop off the referral, which I will be doing this afternoon and they told me that a nurse will call me within the next few weeks and ask me questions and than she’ll decide if I’m a priority and if not, the wait is between 1-9 months. And I seriously can't wait 9 months. I had seen my GP in December and yesterday, he said that in 3 months, my anxiety has gotten worst and now there's even depression and that he wants me seen soon, but the hospital stated they decide when I get seen. What can I do about this, and it has to be at this one specific hospital because it's in my region so I'm stuck with this one

Answer:
You should call your GP physician and have them contact the hospital and tell them you're an urgent patient. If that doesn't work, your GP doc should know of other psychiatrists - and you should be able to get in to see one of them swiftly. Yes, the normal time to see a psychiatrist is over a month - but certainly not nine months!!

In the mean time, your GP doc can prescribe anti-anxiety and anti-depression meds for you (if they haven't already done so).

Best of Luck :-)
Paul.

Answer:
the ideal thing to look one the back of your insurace card and call your customer service and out who is in your network if you have an hmo or a pos, if you’ve a ppo insurance you can go where ever you want you don't have to go to a hospital, you can go to a private practice it shouldn't take you more than a week tops

Answer:
Maybe you can tell them (in a hysterical voice, of course) that you’re suicidal. That should get you in quicker. If they think you're just down in the dumps, they'll just put you off. That's a lousy system they have up there. Best of luck to you.

Answer:
About 30 minutes

A lot of the people waiting for the psychiatrist have schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, more serious conditions, and they will get priority over you. What you need to do is work with the GP to try different medications. It takes like 5 or 6 weeks for most meds to kick in, so you try a med, say prozac, take it for 5 or 6 weeks, and if you are no superior, you increase the dose, try it 5 or 6 weeks, and if still no better, you try a different drug. If you have family members getting treatment, find out what helped and didn't help them, and give that info to the GP and later the psychiatrist. It is all guessing. Also, go to moodgym.anu.edu.au and get free computerized cognitive behavioral therapy, which helps with anxiety disorders even more than drugs (but both is best). Avoid caffeine.. Certain meds increase anxiety. Learn to meditate - no kidding! It helps! MOST people with anxiety disorders can get a lot superior without meds, if they learn CBT and also exercise and meditate & that type of things.

You need to inform your GP of what they stated to you on the phone and that you honestly can't wait that long to get in to see someone. Waiting 2-3 weeks to see a Psychiatrist is pretty usual but not what it sounded like for what they told you. Once you see him or her than you will usually go back in 3 months for a while for a check in to check how you are doing on the medication ( if given) which most likely it will be…..

Your doctor can make a call to the hospital for you out of concern for your well being ————— and in all honesty he has the ability to also prescribe you something for the anxiety and depression as well. I didn't see a psychiatrist when I began taking depression and anxiety medication. Of your conversation with him he might be thinking you’ve Bipolar Disorder ——— which possibly if you do then it's not good to only take a antidepressant so that’s probably why he held off because you’ll get a diagnosis from your Psychiatrist — as to what is going on.

If you do for instance have BP then you’ll need a anti and a mood stabilizer so you don't become manic — you can google BP and it will explain exactly what I mean. He could though give you something temp for the anxiety until you get seen….

– I’ve BP and take a anti and mood stabilizer and sometimes have anxiety so I have something for that as well — so don't be affraid of it because more people in this world do have something going on mentally than not…

– good luck — I hope this helps =)
