I've been seeing an allergist for about 6 weeks for chronic hives. I'm on an array of antihistamines to control the symptoms, but because of the extreme discomfort when not medicated, I have not been able to undergo testing yet.
Until this morning, the hives were pretty unspectacular. But this morning I woke up with a fat upper lip! It's not sore or bruised so I'm certain I didn't get whacked by my husband or roll over into my nightstand or anything.
I have left a message with my allergist's answering service so I can see him as soon as possible, but I am wondering if anyone is familiar with this, and if so, how worried should I be?
For the record, I have been evaluating all of my eating and cleaning habits to determine a cause for my hives and have been unsuccessful thus far, so I don't know the allergen, but I know swelling of the face can be serious. I have no other symptoms.
Answer:
As long as your breathing isn't affected, I wouldn't be too worried. I had that happen a couple of times when I ate pre-cut cantaloupe (something the store used to wash the cantaloupe caused my lips to swell very badly).
Definitely see what your doctor says though, and if you should have difficulty breathing, get to a doctor ASAP.
