Hi, I am due in two weeks and this is my second pregnancy. I’ve some ayurvedice medicine which are left over from my first pregnancy and I wanted to know if they are still safe for me to take them. It is call BAIDYANATH BALANT KADHA NO 2 AYURVEDIC MEDICINE. It's manufacture date is 02 2004. I know it is five year old medicine but my family keep telling me that ayurvedic medicine does not expire and this perticular medicine works better as it age. I just want to know if it's safe or not. Thank you

Answer:
its a decoction type of herbal preparation. its expiry date is only six months to one year from the date of manufacture. so its not at all safe.

Answer:
Most medications, supplements, and even Ayurvedic remedies aren't recommended during pregnancy… many haven't been studied enough, but some have been shown to be dangerous during pregnancy.
If a physician stated it was safe to take during pregnancy, then you'd be good, but having a five year old formula may not be as effective as it once was. Typically any sort of medication (especially herbs) are going to lose potency from the day they are manufactured because of oxidation and general degradation… I haven't heard of any formulas getting more potent over time unless it is a fermentation process, but even then, it would have to be stored and processed properly.
With it being that old, it probably won't be as effective as it once was and you might want to consider getting a new bottle if you think you would use it up in the next few years. Good luck and I hope I helped!
